Aston Villa transfer news live Iling-Junior and Barrenechea medical (2024)

Welcome to BirminghamLive's rolling Aston Villa transfer blog. The summer window is now open for business and it promises to be a big summer for the Villa.

The window officially opened on Friday, June 14, but Villa boss Unai Emery is not expected to recruit many players, admitting the club must be "intelligent" in the transfer market due to the constraints imposed by Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Villa's accounts for 2023 revealed a pre-tax loss of just under £120m, the highest in Europe according to UEFA. Wages rose to £194m and amortisation of player contracts to £92.5m, but Villa insist they continue to operate within the Premier League's financial rules.

They have completed their first business with Lewis Dobbin arriving from Everton and Tim Iroegbunam heading the opposite way - both deals separate from one another. They are also said to have agreed a deal to sign Chelsea's Ian Maatsen while academy prospect Omari Kellyman prepares to switch to Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Douglas Luiz's sale to Juventus for a cash fee plus two players - Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea - inches closer to completion.

Any business done before June 30, which is the accountancy deadline for PSR, will serve as a major boost the club's position within the Premier League's loss limits.

We will bring you all the latest Villa transfer news, gossip, rumours and analysis as it happens throughout the day...

Villa star speaks out as brother and players' families 'hit' by beer cup missiles

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa has revealed his brother and the families of several of his England teammates were caught in the crossfire as Three Lions fans threw beer cups in anger after the Euro 2024 clash with Slovenia.

England boss Gareth Southgate was targeted after the final whistle in the 0-0 draw as he applauded supporters, with a couple of plastic cups aimed in his direction. And Konsa says a number of the players’ friends and family, who were seated in the same area of the stadium as fans, were hit as drinks were thrown.

Asked if the squad had spoken about Southgate being targeted, Konsa said: “We haven’t spoken about it.

Jorgen Strand Larsen battle

Villa have been named amongst a growing group of clubs said to be going to battle over Celta Vigo forward Jorgen Strand Larsen.

The 24-year-old Norwegian international has stood out to club's across the continent having scored 13 goals alongside grabbing three assists in La Liga last season. Matteo Moretto claims the club, along with Midlands rivals Wolves, have made 'concrete steps' towards the signing, whilst West Ham have made initial contact.

Following that up, Fabrizio Romano says Wolves have advanced into the lead with negotiations unfolding rapidly.

Unai Emery has made feelings clear on Jacob Ramsey

Aston Villa have no interest in selling Jacob Ramsey this summer with Unai Emery believing the 23-year-old can one day become a big player for club and country.

Newcastle United and Bayern Munich have both been linked with the midfielder in the last six months, while Tottenham have acted on their interest by lodging a bid. The Express & Star report that Villa have turned down a bid of £20m plus Giovani Lo Celso.

It is understood that once Douglas Luiz completes his €50m move to Juventus this week, Villa will be in the clear regarding Profit and Sustainability Rules. Meanwhile, Omari Kellyman is set to head to Chelsea for £19m after Tim Iroegbunam left for Everton in a move worth up to £13m.

Duran's breaks silence on his future

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran was tight-lipped on his future during a Colombia press conference over the USA amid interest from clubs including Chelsea this summer.

The Blues were given permission to discuss personal terms with the 20-year-old earlier this month after talks with Villa over a move worth £40m. Background checks were also carried out on Duran, who wants to join Enzo Maresca's squad for the new season.

Chelsea had an interest in Duran last January too, but a deal never materialised. He joined Villa from Chicago Fire less than 18 months ago in a deal worth an initial £14.75m, and was made to wait until March of this year to make his first Premier League start, 10 months after bagging his first league goal against Everton at the start of last season.

Aston Villa hatch £30m Man City transfer plan for shock Champions League qualifier

Spanish media tracking Manchester City's future plan for right back Yan Couto claim Aston Villa could look to steal a march in the race for the Brazilian this summer.

Despite signing for Pep Guardiola's side in 2020, his only involvement to date in English football was an unused substutute in 2021's Community Shield showpiece. Utilising their multi-club ownership model, he has spent three of the last four seasons on loan to Girona, who just qualified for next season's Champions League.

With it still being pondered what City will opt to do with the player, and the Spanish side's ability to meet his asking price, newly-interested Villa could seek to give their Premier League rivals a big £30m headache.

Cristiano Ronaldo hope over Aston Villa transfer revealed as major Saudi bid planned

As mentioned earlier, Villa are facing up to the idea of an offer made for Moussa Diaby from Al Nassr this summer.

The Saudi Pro League club missed out on the Frenchman's signature when he became a club-record signing at Villa Park 12 months ago, but a shake-up in the Gulf state suggests they will return for a second crack at the signing.

Jacob Ramsey-Giovani Lo Celso swap offer

According to the Express and Star, Villa have immediately rejected an approach from Tottenham Hotspur proposing a player-plus-cash swap deal.

The North Londoners were reportedly prepared to hand over £20m in one lump sum, plus out-of-favour midfielder Giovani Lo Celso. The Argentine hasn't had a place in Ange Postecoglou's plans and has been linked with the move over the past season, given his good previous working relationship with Unai Emery at both Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal.

In return they wanted Jacob Ramsey, however that is where West Midlands chiefs have cut their counterparts short. They're said to not be interested in any approach for the midfielder, despite suggestions earlier in the year he would be sold for PSR purposes. Douglas Luiz exit will solve that issue anyway, so the club would have no need to sell a player they deem important.

Good morning!

Hello and once again welcome to today's live Aston Villa blog - we're almost at the two-week stage of the summer transfer window and the twists just keep on coming!

An example would be fresh interest in Moussa Diaby from Saudi Pro League outfit Al Nassr, as per the Daily Mail. They say the Gulf state club could be lining up a bid for the 24-year-old, only a year after losing out in the race for his signature.

Diaby has impressed since then, featuring 54 times in English football whilst scoring 11 Villa goals, but now it is said his former suitors are seeking him once again as they want to find a new partner for Cristiano Ronaldo, with Sadio Mane put up for sale.

Villa's 10-player dilemma after Emery demand

Despite being forced to lose one key player to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules this summer, Aston Villa remain focused on building a formidable squad capable of challenging towards the top end of the Premier League and in the Champions League next season.

Monchi and Damian Vidagany are working around the clock at Bodymoor Heath to ensure Villa remain compliant with the Premier League's financial rules and are also improving Unai Emery's squad. The Villa manager is in constant dialogue with the club's transfer chiefs, while owner Nassef Sawiris is also actively involved.

The €50m sale of Douglas Luiz to Juventus puts Villa into the clear regarding PSR, meaning any further transfer activity is based on football decisions rather than solely financial. Of course, the sale of Omari Kellyman will reflect well on Villa's books as he is homegrown - with such sales incentivised by PSR rules - but it is not a sale which Villa are sanctioning to simply avoid breaching rules.

The definitive inside story of Villa transfers and PSR position

Aston Villa's president of football operations Monchi and director of football Damian Vidagany have been working around the clock at Bodymoor Heath with two main objectives in mind - to ensure the club remains compliant with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) by the end of the month and to improve Unai Emery's squad.

While players are either representing their national teams or on holiday, like most of Emery's support staff, Monchi and Vidagany are working 12-hour days in what is a hugely important summer. Working closely with owner Nassef Sawiris, the "triangle of power" faces the daunting task of raising transfer fees to avoid a possible points deduction from the Premier League, yet somehow find a way to make improvements to a squad which qualified for the Champions League and reached a European semi-final last season.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were both docked points in the past 12 months for breaching PSRs, but this won't be the case for Villa next term once Douglas Luiz's move to Juventus is completed. It is understood that his move to the Italian giants will be enough to alleviate any fears of not making the numbers match up by the end of this week.

Why PSR transfer accusations about Chelsea and Villa are absurd

Aston Villa are one of several clubs who have come under scrutiny for their early summer dealings which, despite following Premier League rules, are being questioned by rivals.

Some are believed to be sceptical about certain deals being negotiated ahead of June 30 as clubs try to generate book profits for Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) compliance. Those under the microscope are thought to be the likes of Villa, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Everton. All four are known to be under pressure to raise money before the end of the month, and while there is no suggestion of wrongdoing by the clubs involved, it won't take long to dispel any doubts around the legitimacy of Villa's moves.

The Premier League look at all transactions clubs make, from player sales to commercial deals, for fair market value. And some clubs believe that sales of young players between certain teams are driven to generate profits, while fans of rival teams are even accusing Villa of selling players for inflated fees.

Earlier this week, Villa were claimed to hold an interest in Real Sociedad's Brais Mendez.

Following up on the initial claim, AS state that the 27-year-old comes with a €60m (£50.6m) price tag. Sociedad are said to be planning for no team to match that fee.

Unai Emery 'targets' Euro 2024 star as Aston Villa look to boost creativity

That said, there may be some huge hurdles to clear in order to get the deal completed...

A number of English rivals have been linked as well, and now the club could have to fend off interest from Italy too as calciomercato.it claim that Beier is also on AC Milan's list of targets. Well, how about looking to Portugal to start with as new links have emerged to another exciting attacking talent! According to A Bola, the club could be ready to 'launch an attack' to land Sporting CP's Pedro Goncalves.

They say Villa's interest is long-standing, though due to his key nature within Ruben Amorim's side they will only consider his sale if the €80m (£67.4m) release clause is met. He featured in 47 of 52 possible matches at club level last season, scoring 18 goals and providing 15 assists.

Tammy Abraham transfer state of play

Tammy Abraham will be allowed to leave AS Roma this summer and Aston Villa are said to be aware of the situation.

Roma are reportedly willing to part with Abraham for around £20m this summer, three years after he joined the club from Chelsea. The 25-year-old bagged 17 goals in his first Serie A campaign at Roma and also lifted the Europa Conference League under Jose Mourinho.

The following season, Abraham scored eight goals in 38 league appearances, but suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the final match of the campaign . It ruled him out for 10 months as he returned to action at the back end of last season in Roma's 1-0 win over rivals Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe agrees with Villa as he speaks out

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has criticised the financial anchoring proposal in the Premier League, calling it “absurd”.

Ratcliffe’s United and Aston Villa, it is understood, voted against the proposal which would put a cap on the amount clubs can spend on wages, transfer and agents’ fees. But Premier League clubs will trial it next season on a non-binding basis.

The existing financial regulations, which limit losses to £105m over a three-year period, will remain in place, but top-flight sides will test squad cost rules and top to bottom anchoring rules in shadow to enable the league to fully evaluate the system and complete consultation with stakeholders.

Max Beier transfer state of play

Aston Villa reportedly hold a strong interest in Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier as Unai Emery looks to reshuffle his attacking options.

Chelsea were granted permission to speak with Jhon Duran earlier this month, but the Blues appear to be no closer to signing the Villa striker. Villa had agreed a deal with Chelsea for the Colombia international and Duran wants to move to Stamford Bridge.

There is no shortage of interest in the 20-year-old, who could depart for a sizeable fee. It would leave a big gap in Villa's squad as they would have nobody to back-up Ollie Watkins.

Unai Emery's dream 25-man squad

Aston Villa have been one of the busiest Premier League clubs at the start of the summer transfer window as they look to sell and buy before the end of the month.

Tim Iroegbunam was first out the door as he completed a £9m move to Everton last week, before Lewis Dobbin joined Villa from the Toffees for £10m. Meanwhile, Juventus found an agreement with Villa to sign Douglas Luiz for €50m, while Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea will join Unai Emery's squad in a separate deal worth €22m.

Villa are also selling Omari Kellyman to Chelsea for £19m, while Ian Maatsen is poised to sign a six-year contract with Villa in a deal worth £37.5m from the Blues. More ins and outs are expected in the coming weeks as Emery looks to shape his squad before the start of the new Premier League season, which gets underway against West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday, August 17.
