Ivan Toney left 'disgusted' by late introduction
Gareth Southgate also said Ivan Toney was left 'disgusted' when he was introduced from the England bench in the dying seconds of the match.
"There's no question that Ivan Toney was pretty disgusted when I put him on with a minute to go," explained Southgate.
"I think we've made up now! He had a big impact, with the second goal as well.
"I think if you put a sub on at that time, it's a last throw of the dice. He maybe doesn't even touch the ball. I completely understand it.
"I don't like putting a player in that position, but I just had a feeling that he might have been able to cause a bit of chaos."

More reaction from Gareth Southgate
"I had a funny feeling the game wasn't dead and I know that sounds ridiculous. We were pushing and probing.
"Ultimately it is the one we have thrown in the box that got us the goal.
"That is why you don't make changes when people are clamouring for more changes. We had enough attacking players on the pitch."

Gareth Southgate admits he nearly took Jude Bellingham off
Gareth Southgate has admitted that he was close to taking Jude Bellingham off just before his incredible equaliser for England against Slovakia.
Speaking in his post-match interview, the England boss said: "We were thinking we should take him off, but you know he is capable of those sorts of moments.
"We know in the game itself we needed to better with the ball. We couldn’t find the right solutions in the first half and we did it better in the second.
"Under that pressure they kept probing. In the end it is the old fashioned long throw that gets the goal, those moments can happen when you keep wearing a team down.
"I'm so proud of the players and the spirit the lads showed. Everybody we put into the game played a part and helped us get over the line.
"They are all pushing and helping each other and tonight, that made the difference."

Georgia take surprise lead over Spain
There is a major shock on the cards in tonight's other game!
Georgia have just taken the lead against Spain, with Robin Le Normand diverting the ball into his own net.
The match is being shown live on ITV1 and ITVX, if you're interested.

Gary Neville urges Gareth Southgate to make changes
Gary Neville believes it is 'unrealistic' to expect England to win the Euros unless Gareth Southgate makes some drastic tactical changes.
"I think everybody in the country has been crying out for more changes after every single match, from game one, two, three," says Neville on ITV.
"I think the same clamour will happen again for Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, for other players to come into the team to create more balance, more excitement.
"Getting over the line and winning is all important in a month-long tournament.
"But to think you can go through a month-long tournament playing like we are doing and get through to the end, I think, is unrealistic."

Roy Keane gives 'credit where it's due'
"I know the lads will talk about performances but at this level it is about getting over the line and winning," says ITV pundit Roy Keane.
"Everyone wants a great performance but if they keep getting results and going through... The next game always seems tough. If you perform like that you're going to go out but let's see how they go.
"You have to give them praise. We were obviously really critical at half-time but they found a way to win. The top players found a way.
"God help us when Bellingham starts playing well because he's produced two huge moments and they're getting over the line. You have to give credit where it's due.
"They've found a way, you have to give credit for that. Some of the greatest satisfaction I've had in my career has been when you don't play well but you win a game of football."

Jude Bellingham: We showed character
"I know what I can deliver in those moments," says Jude Bellingham as he reflects on his incredible bicycle kick which sent England on their way.
"Regardless of what people say, I've done it this year for Real Madrid, I've done it for England before. Just happy to help the team.
"A good win, through to the next round. Very happy. It's been tough the last week or so to keep the negative energy out of the camp.
"I think today they will have been ready for us. We showed the character that England's missed. It's very important to get through."

Well that was quite something, wasn't it?
England were awful for the vast majority of proceedings, but the result is what matters in tournament football and they eventually managed to get it.

Make sure to stay tuned for all the best reaction. There will be plenty of it!

Archie Griggs
England 0-1 Slovakia (82)
More agony for England!
Declan Rice rattles the woodwork with a powerful effort from long range.
It had Martin Dubravka clawing at thin air.

Archie Griggs
England 0-1 Slovakia (79)
Phil Foden swings a deep free-kick towards Harry Kane, who inexplicably fails to hit the target from just yards out.
He will be hugely disappointed with that one. You'd have put your mortgage on him to score from there.
Slovakia are starting to run down the clock. They can smell the quarter-finals.
England are yet to register a single attempt on target.

Archie Griggs
England 0-1 Slovakia (67)
Declan Rice is cleaned out by Juraj Kucka, who has been walking a tightrope after his booking in the first half.
It is baffling that he has not been sent off yet. He keeps making silly fouls but the referee seems determined to keep his cards in his pocket.
Archie Griggs
England 0-1 Slovakia (65)
Finally, we have a substitution from Gareth Southgate!
Cole Palmer is introduced from the bench, replacing Kieran Tripper who has picked up a knock.

It sees England win a free-kick in a threatening position, with Phil Foden stepping up to take it.

Second half begins
Gareth Southgate has decided not to make any changes at the break for reasons that will only be known to him.
That is astonishing to say the least.
England get the second half underway. A huge response is needed.

Gary Neville: This game has Iceland vibes
"I was at on a bench in Nice when England played Iceland," says Gary Neville on ITV Sport.
"This game has Iceland vibes. Gareth Southgate needs to rip up the script.
"I don't think it's the case of one or two substitutes, its a case of three substitutes."
Roy Keane adds: "You can't keep waiting, the waiting is over. It's the biggest team talk of Gareth Southgate's career.
"There have to be changes. Southgate has to get more energy.
"They look so flat, they aren't pulling together. How many more excuses can we make?"

Thoughts at the interval
By Ryan Taylor in Gelsenkirchen
England booed off after a horrible half which did finish with small glimpses of promise.
Alarming lack of creativity and pace. Harry Kane could have zero complaints if he was hooked.
Cole Palmer should be getting warm. Anthony Gordon also.
Archie Griggs
England behind at the break
A smattering of boos ring out from the stands as the referee blows the half-time whistle.
At the start of this match it was the England supporters making all the noise.
Now it's the Slovakia fans in full voice, with their side leading the Three Lions at the break.
It's been really poor from England, who are just 45 minutes away from crashing out of the Euros in embarrassing fashion.

England win a free-kick on the right flank as Ondrej Duda tangles with Jude Bellingham.
Phil Foden steps up but his delivery is headed away from danger.

Archie Griggs
England 0-1 Slovakia (36)

England fans are booing their own players and you can understand their frustrations.

GOAL! England 0-1 Slovakia - Ivan Schranz (25)
England are behind!
They fail to deal with a long ball into the box and Ivan Schranz keeps his composure to score his third goal of the tournament.
To be honest, it's no less than what Slovakia deserve with England really struggling to impose themselves on this match.
Marc Guehi appears to have picked up a knock, but he looks okay to continue for now.

The England fans in the stands are starting to get a little bit frustrated and with good reason.
Once again, the Three Lions have not been up to standard.
Still early days, though.

England 0-0 Slovakia (14)
Slovakia break away down the left-hand side through Lukas Haraslin, who capitalises on a lapse in focus from Kyle Walker.
He sees an attempt blocked before the ball trickles in the direction of Jordan Pickford, but it's eventually hacked away.
Jude Bellingham gives away a free-kick, which comes to nothing for Slovakia.
Juraj Kucka, formerly of Watford, is then booked for a foul in the middle of the pitch.
Archie Griggs
England 0-0 Slovakia (9)
Slovakia swing the ball into the England box again but nobody is there to get on the end of it.
England manage to carve out a chance from the resulting goal kick but Kieran Trippier fires a first-time effort high and wide.
The underdogs are on the front foot as things stand. Not great from England so far.
Archie Griggs
England 0-0 Slovakia (8)
Bukayo Saka breaks down the right flank and exchanges a couple of passes with Jude Bellingham.
It ends up with Saka in a shooting position, but the ball is nicked away before he can pull the trigger.
Kobbie Mainoo is then booked for a challenge on Ondrej Duda.
England need to get a grip on their discipline here. They've picked up two yellow cards in the opening eight minutes.
Archie Griggs
England 0-0 Slovakia (6)
Slovakia swing a free-kick into the box from close to the halfway line but the offside flag goes up.
They get another chance down the left-hand side through David Hancko, who fires just wide of the far post.
It's been a sloppy start from England, with the Three Lions struggling to keep hold of the ball.
Archie Griggs
England 0-0 Slovakia (4)
Kieran Trippier and Phil Foden combine on the left flank, but it comes to nothing and England are forced to recycle possession.
Marc Guehi then brings down his marker and picks up the first yellow card of the match.
It means he will be suspended for the quarter-finals if England make it through.

Kick-off
Slovakia get the ball rolling and we are underway.
COME ON ENGLAND!

Here we go!
The teams emerge from the tunnel with England fans making all the noise.
Jordan Pickford will indeed start in goal, which is a relief for the Three Lions.
Slovakia's players belt out their national anthem, which is loudly booed, before God Save The King gets a rousing rendition.
We're just moments away from kick-off in Gelsenkirchen. Will it be a stylish win for England or will Slovakia spring a surprise?
Here's a final reminder of the two teams...
England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier, Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Kane.
Slovakia: Dubravka, Pekarik, Vavro, Skriniar, Hancko, Lobotka, Kucka, Duda, Schranz, Haraslin, Strelec.

Jordan Pickford 'will be fine'
Joe Hart does not expect Gareth Southgate to be forced into a late change between the sticks.
"Occupational hazard," he tells BBC Radio 5 Live. "I saw it, he'll be fine.
"He made a low save and he looked like he just got his little finger caught in the ground. You fear the worst straight away but it's nothing to be worried about.
"He'll be absolutely fine."

'Now or never' for struggling England
Conor Coady has first-hand experience of the pressure the England players will be feeling ahead of kick-off.
He tells BBC Radio 5 Live: "Now it gets really tough. This is where the real business starts. It’s now or never.
"The players could be sat there after the game knowing they are going home tomorrow if they don’t get it right."
Archie Griggs
Jordan Pickford in some discomfort
Jordan Pickford has just marched off the pitch clutching his left arm in a potentially worrying sign for England.
He appeared to hurt his hand during the warm-ups before whipping off his gloves and looking in a bit of discomfort.
There is no suggestion that Pickford will be unable to start, though. He will be determined to play through the pain as England seek a place in the last eight.
He was given a big hug by team-mate Aaron Ramsdale before going back down the tunnel.

Harry Kane to surpass Peter Shilton milestone
In today's game against Slovakia, Harry Kane will overtake Peter Shilton as the player with the most competitive appearances for England.
The former Tottenham striker will represent his country for the 79th time in a competitive match.
He will be desperate to cap the milestone with at least one goal to fire England into the quarter-finals and silence his critics.

Gareth Southgate explains team selection
Gareth Southgate has explained why he has only made one change to his England line-up against Slovakia.
"I think those players over a period of time have proved to be the best," he tells ITV Sport.
"We showed signs the attacking play was coming together, but we have good players on the bench able to change things."
On his decision to bring Kobbie Mainoo into midfield, Southgate says: "He uses the ball really well and we know that is the way he plays. It will help us get through their high pressure.
"He has played some huge games already for his club, he looks at ease in our environment. When he came into the game the other night you can see the impact he can have."

England subs could be the difference
By Ryan Taylor in Gelsenkirchen
Gareth Southgate's substitutions could prove imperative here, particularly given there are several players knocking on his door for a start.
I would expect to see Cole Palmer as the first attacking substitute tonight. I think he has done enough to constitute that following his eye-catching cameo off the bench against Slovenia.
If Bukayo Saka was not two-time England Player of the Year, he would probably start.
It's also tough on Jarrod Bowen, who was great from the bench in this stadium against Serbia when he came off the bench and ran at his full-back. He remains another great option.
Kobbie Mainoo rightly starts but we need to see more from England tonight. They need to up the tempo and look to create chances from the get-go.
Archie Griggs
Stat attack
Slovakia have never beaten England, with the Three Lions winning five of their six matches and the other game ending in a draw.
Their last meeting was in 2017, when goals from Eric Dier and Marcus Rashford saw England register a 2-1 victory.
The only time England have failed to beat Slovakia was at Euro 2016, with the two sides playing out a dire goalless draw.
If the Three Lions win today, they will reach the quarter-finals of successive Euros tournaments for the very first time.
Slovakia are in the knockout stages of a major tournament for only the third time in their history and have never reached the last eight.
They only lost two games in qualifying, both to Portugal, having adopted a forward-thinking approach under Francesco Calzona.

Luke Shaw on England bench
Luke Shaw has been named among the England substitutes for today's game.
It will be interesting to see if he comes off the bench after missing all of England's group stage matches.
Gareth Southgate confirmed earlier this week that Shaw could play his first minutes at the Euros against Slovakia.
He said: "Luke won't be available to start, but we’ll have a chat with the medical team to see whether he can play a part or whether he could do with a little bit more training first."

England accused of playing 'walking football'
Darren Anderton believes England's problems lie in their lack of attacking movement, with the Three Lions yet to hit their stride in the final third.
"It’s the movement, honestly it’s like watching walking football most of the time when we get in the final third," he told Bojoko.
"Much like everyone, I’m a bit underwhelmed. The substitutes are the ones playing without fear. [Jude] Bellingham and [Bukayo] Saka are playing with fear."

Opposition report: Slovakia
Slovakia made it through to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stages.
They registered one win, one draw and one defeat to end up on four points, the same as Belgium, Ukraine and Romania.
Ivan Schranz is likely to pose the biggest threat to England's defenders, with his two goals putting him joint-second in the list of top scorers.
The winger bagged the decisive goal against Belgium in Slovakia's opening match and scored his second of the tournament against Ukraine.
Slovakia currently sit 45th in the world rankings, behind the likes of Panama, Qatar and Scotland.

Gareth Southgate looking for improvements
Gareth Southgate is desperate for his England team to show they have improved since the group stages.
They finished at the top of Group C but were nowhere near their best, stumbling over the line against Serbia before being held to draws by Denmark and Slovenia.
Speaking in yesterday's press conference, Southgate said: "The fact is you go into a different mental state [in the knockout stage]. Everybody knows that knockout football is jeopardy.
"Everybody knows that on a given day, an opponent can make it really tough for you. You know the quality of the opposition left is high and so it changes the mindset. We are trying to achieve something exceptional.
"It is a step at a time and tomorrow is a chance to improve aspects of our game, to show composure in moments. The game will take us in different directions at different moments and you've got to be able to respond and react in the right way in all of those moments.
"We have thrived in those challenges in the past and we're looking forward to tomorrow."

Early team news
Gareth Southgate is widely expected to make just one change to his England side this evening.
Kobbie Mainoo is likely to replace Conor Gallagher in midfield to mark his first international start at a major tournament.
Jordan Pickford will be in goal for England, with a centre-back pairing of John Stones and Marc Guehi ahead of him.
Kyle Walker is set to feature at right-back, while Kieran Trippier will be on the left with Luke Shaw not yet fit enough to start.
Mainoo will be partnered in midfield by Declan Rice with Jude Bellingham playing in a more advanced role behind Harry Kane, who will start as the lone striker.
Bukayo Saka will occupy the right wing for England while Phil Foden is expected to play on the left.

Welcome!
Hello and welcome to Express Sport's live coverage of England's second round match against Slovakia at Euro 2024.
The Three Lions are the overwhelming favourites to reach the quarter-finals despite failing to impress in the group stages.
However, there are no easy games at this stage of the competition and Slovakia will be desperate to spring a surprise.
Will it be a routine victory for England or will their unfancied opponents sting Gareth Southgate and his players?
It won't be long until we find out, with kick-off coming up in around two hours.
