Tuesday's League One reports (2024)

Cambridge United 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru struck a late leveller as Sheffield Wednesday fought back to claim a draw at Cambridge.

Dele-Bashiru raced on to a flicked header from Olamide Shodipo in the 80th minute and slammed a low shot past Dimitar Mitov.

It was deserved reward for Wednesday, who grew into the game after a fast start from the hosts which saw them lead through George Williams' header.

Cambridge had already gone close through Joe Ironside by the time Williams stooped to meet a near-post corner from Jack Iredale in the 20th minute and guided his header past Bailey Peaco*ck-Farrell.

Wednesday improved as the half progressed and Lewis Wing passed up a golden chance to equalise when he raced clear but saw his shot smothered by Mitov and Dele-Bashiru hit the outside of the post with a low effort shortly afterwards.

After the break, Sam Smith cleared a Marvin Johnson corner off the line before Dele-Bashiru's sharp finish squared things up.

Seconds later, Mitov made a superb save to keep out Liam Palmer's header and earn his side a point.

Charlton 2-3 Accrington

Accrington midfielder Harry Pell scored twice as his side won a thrilling League One encounter with Charlton.

A cagey opening period came to life in the 10th minute when Pell curled a free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards.

Charlton got themselves back on level terms after 31 minutes, David Morgan putting the ball into his own goal after the visitors failed to adequately clear Alex Gilbey's cross.

John Coleman's side nearly regained their advantage just three minutes later through another Pell free-kick - but this time it struck the crossbar.

Stanley did then restore their lead in the 57th minute, Pell finding himself unmarked at the back post to tap home.

Ethan Hamilton appeared to have made the points safe for the visitors when he scored his team's third goal in the 66th minute with a shot from the edge of the box.

But, with the game seemingly out of reach, Jayden Stockley finished smartly to give the hosts a lifeline in the 78th minute.

Charlton pushed for a late equaliser and went close through Josh Davison and Conor Washington - but the visitors held on.

Cheltenham 3-1 Morecambe

A quick second-half brace from Swansea loanee Kyle Joseph secured a convincing 3-1 home victory for Cheltenham over Morecambe.

It was the first ever League One meeting between the newly-promoted clubs and the hosts opened the scoring in the 26th minute through Liam Sercombe.

The fit-again midfielder finished well into the bottom-left corner for his first of the season after Mattie Pollock nodded the ball down for him from Sean Long's throw-in.

The Shrimps levelled seven minutes before half-time from an indirect free-kick after Scott Flinders handled a back-pass from Chris Hussey.

Burnley loan prospect Adam Phillips slammed into the bottom corner after Greg Leigh touched the set-piece to him 18 yards from goal.

Leigh headed against the left post just before the break and Cheltenham were close to regaining the lead when Kyle Vassell's header was parried by Jokull Andresson.

But Joseph struck in the 65th minute, firing in Matty Blair's cross from the right.

And less than three minutes later the 20-year-old forward netted his second, curling one in off the inside of the left post to put the game beyond Morecambe's reach and make it two home wins in four days for the Robins.

Crewe 0-4 Sunderland

Ross Stewart struck twice for Sunderland as they won 4-0 at Crewe to move up to second in the table.

An own goal by Terell Thomas helped Lee Johnson's side on their way at Gresty Road and substitute Leon Dajaku completed the rout.

Early on, the hosts were indebted to goalkeeper Will Jaaskelainen for two smart saves which thwarted Tom Flanagan's set-piece header and Alex Pritchard when the midfielder got clear.

Scott Robertson and Kane Ramsay went close with driven efforts for the Railwaymen, but Dave Artell's side looked suspect at the back - although the first goal in the 25th minute came in rather fortuitous circ*mstances.

When Pritchard played the ball across the box from the left, Thomas sliced his clearance beyond Jaaskelainen and into the far corner.

There was no doubting the quality of the Black Cats' second in the 32nd minute as Dan Neil teed up Stewart with a cross from the byline and the striker found the corner of the net with a firm header.

Stewart got his second on 55 minutes after Pritchard's corner was flicked on at the near post by Callum Doyle.

Former Sunderland striker Mikael Mandron almost cut the arrears as he scooped the ball towards the far corner from a tight angle but it was kept out by Ron-Thorben Hoffman.

And Lee Johnson's men got a fourth goal in the 73rd minute when Neil released Dajaku, who raced clear down the left and drove under Jaaskelainen.

Fleetwood 0-1 Burton Albion

Tom O'Connor earned Burton all three points in a victory over Fleetwood.

O'Connor scored his fourth goal of the season and his third in the last two games in the 36th minute direct from a corner when his inswinger evaded everyone and ended up in the roof of the home net.

The goal came at a time when Burton were dominant with the wind at their backs and Fleetwood goalkeeper Alex Cairns was forced into a string of fine saves as he almost single-handedly kept the visitors at bay.

His best came when he tipped a Lucas Akins shot onto the crossbar after earlier making two excellent blocks from Daniel Jebbison.

The home side started the second half much better and caused the Burton defence some problems but the closest they came to a goal was when Callum Camps' superb volley with the outside of his right was deflected just wide.

Dan Batty and Callum Johnson both forced Ben Garrett into comfortable saves as Fleetwood pressed to the end but could not get through the Brewers defence.

Gillingham 1-0 Doncaster

Stuart O'Keefe's fortuitous goal earned Gillingham their first home win in almost two months, as they ground out a 1-0 victory against League One's bottom club Doncaster.

The result moved the Gills three points clear of the bottom four, but Donny remain rooted to the foot of the table after drawing yet another blank in front of goal.

Doncaster should have gone ahead in the fourth minute, however, when Joe Dodoo's pass found its way through for Kyle Knoyle, who could only shoot into the side netting.

Robbie McKenzie almost broke the deadlock for Gillingham when his header from the edge of the area clipped the outside of the post, following Ryan Jackson's long throw.

The Gills were slightly improved after half-time, with Danny Lloyd having a shot shovelled away by Rovers goalkeeper Pontus Dahlberg before Tiago Cukur skimmed an effort just wide for Donny.

The hosts then finally grabbed the winner with 11 minutes left as Vadaine Oliver attacked the near post from Lloyd's corner and his header brushed in off O'Keefe's back.

Lincoln 0-1 AFC Wimbledon

Aaron Pressley left Lincoln all shook up as his early first-half penalty handed AFC Wimbledon victory in a feisty League One clash at the LNER Arena.

The teenage Scot's fifth-minute goal also brought an end to three straight away defeats as the Wombles followed up Saturday's dramatic victory over Sheffield Wednesday with a deserved success in front of a vocal away support of 369 travelling fans.

Wimbledon started the game really brightly, keeping Lincoln pinned in their own half and within five minutes they were ahead.

Conor McGrandles was harshly adjudged to have brought down Luke McCormick on the byline and from the resultant penalty, Pressley slammed a low shot into the bottom corner just past the despairing hand of Imps keeper Josh Griffiths.

Ted Bishop struck Lincoln's first chance just wide, stretching to latch onto Lasse Sorensen's terrific cross, before firing narrowly over.

Lewis Fiorini brought out a diving save from Wombles keeper Nik Tzanev and play immediately switched to the other end where Jack Rudoni broke free on goal but his low effort drifted just wide.

Wimbledon seemed content to just hang on to their slender lead and Chris Maguire chanced his arm without success as the Imps were reduced to pot shots from outside the box but never seriously troubled Tzanev again.

Oxford United 2-0 Shrewsbury

Long-range shots from Mark Sykes and Cameron Brannagan brought Oxford a 2-0 victory in the absence of boss Karl Robinson, continuing Shrewsbury's miserable away run in League One.

Oxford head coach Robinson watched the game at home while awaiting the results of a test for Covid-19, after feeling unwell, but would have enjoyed what he saw.

Steve Cotterill's men had managed just one point on their travels this season, and although they had the better of a dull first half, they were undone straight after the restart.

Sykes netted a minute into the second half with an angled 25-yard drive that beat everybody, including goalkeeper Marko Marosi, as it arrowed into the bottom corner.

Brannagan also struck from outside the area, with a low 25-yard shot in the 87th minute.

The visitors made the better start, with Tom Bloxham side-footing Dan Udoh's cross wide of the far post.

At the other end Aaron Pierre's block denied home striker Matty Taylor.

In the second half Brannagan squandered two good chances to increase Oxford's lead before making it third time lucky and converting late on.

Plymouth 3-0 Bolton

Ryan Lowe's Plymouth maintained top spot with a comfortable home win over Bolton to make it three League One wins on the spin and 13 unbeaten.

Brendan Galloway got Argyle off to a flying start with a cheeky backheel goal at the far post from Conor Grant's corner - helped on by Dan Scarr - in the sixth minute.

Grant took centre stage in the 15th minute with a superb finish from outside the box, sending a grasscutter skimming off the wet surface and into the bottom corner past diving keeper Joel Dixon.

Ryan Broom sealed victory in stoppage time, firing home after substitute Danny Mayor and Ryan Hardie's efforts had held up on the soaked pitch.

Panutche Camara, Broom and top scorer Hardie all had first-half efforts blocked or saved as the hosts poured forward in the teeming rain.

Camara came even closer to increasing Argyle's lead in the 64th minute but his measured close-range effort bounced back off a post with Dixon beaten.

Former Argyle midfielder and Bolton second-half sub Antoni Sarcevic came closest to reducing the arrears cutting in from the left but his shot on the run flew just wide.

Portsmouth 0-4 Ipswich

Ipswich striker Conor Chaplin scored against his former club as Paul Cook celebrated his return to Portsmouth with a comprehensive win.

The Tractor Boys' top scorer Macauley Bonne, Sone Aluko and Wes Burns were also on target on a night when Portsmouth conceded four goals for the second game in a row.

Ipswich were gifted the lead four minutes before half time when goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was caught dwelling on a Sean Raggett back-pass, allowing Bonne to nip in and finish.

Pompey academy graduate Chaplin doubled that advantage nine minutes into the second half with a neat finish from Janoi Donacien's cross.

It was 3-0 four minutes later when Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Bazunu allowed Aluku's tame shot to squirm under his body and into the net.

Burns completed the rout 15 minutes from time by sweeping home another Donacien cross from the right.

It was just Ipswich's second away league win this season and it took them above Portsmouth in the table.

Rotherham 0-0 Wycombe

Wycombe put in a dogged display to extend their unbeaten run to five games with a goalless draw at Rotherham.

Last season's Championship rivals could not be separated with the visitors the happier side to collect a point from a game containing few real chances.

High-flying Wycombe saw Ryan Tafazolli steer an early header wide.

Rotherham's best first-half chances fell to Rarmani Edmonds-Green, who miskicked the ball, and Will Grigg, who headed straight at David Stockdale.

Stand-in Rotherham goalkeeper Josh Vickers was forced into action early in the second half as he superbly clawed out Joe Jacobson's curling free-kick.

Grigg then sneaked in on goal from Michael Smith's pass but his effort was deflected just wide.

The hosts cranked up the pressure in the second half but Freddie Ladapo could not get the right contact on Chiedozie Ogbene's cross as the spoils were shared.

Wigan 1-2 MK Dons

Wigan lost ground on their promotion rivals at the top end of the League One table, as MK Dons ran out deserved winners at the DW Stadium.

The home side had even taken a 20th-minute lead, with Charlie Wyke slotting home Will Keane's right-wing cross.

But the Dons also started well and levelled on the half-hour mark, when Daniel Harvie crossed for Peter Kioso to head past Ben Amos.

Before the Latics could respond, the visitors added a second goal seven minutes later, with a cross from the left taking a nick first off Jack Whatmough and then his Wigan team-mate Tendayi Darikwa.

Leam Richardson's hosts tried to rally but, if anything, the Dons could have added further goals in the second half.

A fine free-kick from Scott Twine somehow flew all the way out for a goal kick, before Wigan were indebted to forward Callum Lang for a desperate last-gasp interception with Mo Eisa waiting to pounce.
